Walking Together: The Impact Series

When the World Shrank, the Circle Opened: From Isolation to the Power of the "Elder"

The Shadow of Isolation

Four years ago, a single, split-second decision to rescue her dog instead of calling the Fire Department altered Eva Gersbach’s life forever. The resulting traumatic brain injury left her navigating persistent vertigo and nausea—invisible symptoms that began to shrink her world.

Eva found herself "retiring" from a job she loved and giving up the long drives required for her passion for Dog Agility trials. Slowly, her active life grew smaller. "I found myself more alone than before the accident," Eva reflects. "Being an older, single woman with a dog is one thing, but becoming lonely was quite another".

The First Spark

The turning point came through a reconnection with Birgit, a former teammate from over 20 years ago. During a walk, Birgit shared her vision for the Be Embraced foundation. While Eva was immediately intrigued, it took time before she felt ready to step into a monthly event. The invitation that finally spoke to her was one centered on gratitude—a theme that resonated deeply with her spirit.

The "I Belong" Moment

Walking into her first gathering, Eva was greeted by a warm wave of "open arms, open faces, and open sharing". Expecting to perhaps be the oldest in the room, she was surprised and encouraged to find a vibrant tapestry of women of all ages.

"I did not feel out of place," Eva shares. "This felt like a pat on my back and a hand on my shoulder saying 'I belong.' How unexpected and very wonderful".

A Shift in Perspective

Before joining the community, Eva had begun to quietly accept aloneness as an inevitable part of aging. But through the regular events and the focus on personal evolution, her joy began to resurface. She realized that her "inventory of lived experiences" was not a relic of the past, but a gift to be shared.

The transformation was profound: Eva moved from viewing herself simply as a "senior" to embracing the role of an elder—someone who, despite the challenges, still holds immense value and a rightful place in the circle.

A Message of Hope

To any woman currently navigating a "rough patch" or feeling the weight of isolation, Eva offers these words of encouragement: "You will not feel alone on your journey... You will find encouragement, caring, laughter, and the open hearts of women who believe in the power of community".

When asked to describe the Be Embraced experience in just one word, Eva chose: Inspiring!
